Steve Mayer

I create and explore otherworldly narratives using two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and sometimes ground-based works. in the time that the elements of the narrative distill to their essential forms. The grotto is a conceptual touchstone that I always return to; a place that unites water and land and, symbolically and traditionally, the natural and the supernatural. From this place of origin, the hedgerows, groves and ravines also become paradises to travel to, or from where to leave.

Growing up in the Delaware Water Gap instilled in me a deep sense of animism. Discovering this face of arcadia that is both familiar and out of time has become endless, where one can find a shooting star or a strange melody suspended in the air.
